If you are obese, the standard advice to “eat less” carries a 99.35 percent failure rate. We must stop pretending this strategy works. As I’ve said, the obsessive focus on calories is neither useful nor effective; it’s the definition of insanity to keep giving the same advice and hoping for different results. Obesity is not a caloric imbalance; it is a hormonal one.

Share

Stop counting calories and start focusing on the hormonal impact of the foods you choose.

Food is Information, Not Just Fuel

Calories are a measure of heat energy in physics, but in human physiology, they are a sadly incomplete description of food’s fattening effect. Food contains two things: energy (calories) and information (the body’s hormonal response). Different foods generate completely different hormonal instructions. For instance, 200 calories of cookies spikes insulin, telling your body to store fat, while 200 calories of eggs releases GLP-1, telling you to stop eating. It’s as bizarre as saying that selling cocaine and selling men’s suits is the same thing because they both involve money.

Prioritize foods that signal satiety (like eggs) over those that trigger fat storage (like cookies).

Resetting Your Internal Fat Thermostat

The body regulates body fat using a homeostatic mechanism similar to a room thermostat. Obesity is not caused by eating too many calories; it’s a disorder where the “body set weight” is set too high.

If you open a window to cool a hot room without turning down the thermostat, the heater just cranks up to compensate. Similarly, if you just “eat less,” your body fat thermostat responds by increasing hunger and lowering your metabolic rate to regain the weight. You can’t use willpower to decide to be less hungry.

To lose weight permanently, you must use hormones to dial down your body fat thermostat rather than fighting your hunger.

Vaden open the expert playbook they’ve used to help thousands of America’s most trusted voices and top personalities expand their reach and grow their revenues by implementing a system that has laser focus.

Most messengers communicate to the world; but Mission-Driven Messengers communicate to a person.

Here are 15 key ideas from the sources, presented in a Blinkist-style format, drawing on the authors' direct and motivational tone:

Your Personal Brand is Your Reputation

A personal brand isn't just about external elements like a logo or a social media profile; it's fundamentally who you are. It's the sum total of your experiences, expertise, beliefs, values, and inherent purpose.

The power of your Uniqueness is not that it is new. The power of your Uniqueness is that it worked for you.

Think of it simply as your reputation – what comes to mind when people think of you. The key is to be intentional and proactive in shaping this reputation, ensuring it reflects precisely what you want to be known for. Without this deliberate effort, you risk letting others define your identity by default. Your personal brand is unique to you and something no one can ever take away.

Diluted Focus Leads to Diluted Results

One of the most significant reasons personal brands often fail is a diluted focus. When you spread your precious resources—time, money, and attention—across too many different initiatives, topics, audiences, or revenue streams, each endeavor receives only a fraction of its potential, leading to marginal outcomes.

Don’t be so concerned about the width of your reach that you forget about the depth of your impact.

The authors highlight that true success comes from "radically focus[ing] on and relentlessly dedicat[ing] yourself to" one primary initiative. By concentrating your efforts, you exponentially increase your chances of standing out and achieving substantial results, preventing yourself from becoming just more noise in a crowded market.

Serve the Person You Once Were

To powerfully connect with your audience and discover your unique message, look inward: "You are most powerfully positioned to serve the person you once were". This means drawing from your own life's challenges, setbacks, obstacles, and tragedies that you've overcome.

Hearing:

The "I Want to Win" Mindset: Many of us are trained, formally or informally, to be argumentative and triumph in conversations. Instead of truly hearing, we're on the hunt for weaknesses, ready to "cut our adversary down". This leaves the other person feeling dismissed and distrustful.

The "I Am in Charge" Trap: If you're a boss, parent, or elder, you might believe your role is to explain, instruct, or dictate. Listening, in this view, feels like intellectual passivity or a sign of laziness. There's a fear that if you listen, your authority will be diminished.

The "I Have Expertise (and You Don’t)" Snare:

Founded as a nonprofit with safety enshrined as its core mission, the organization was meant, its leader Sam Altman told us, to act as a check against more purely mercantile, and potentially dangerous, forces. What could go wrong?

Over time, Hao began to wrestle ever more deeply with that question. Increasingly, she realized that the core truth of this massively disruptive sector is that its vision of success requires an almost unprecedented amount of resources: the “compute” power of high-end chips and the processing capacity to create massive large language models, the sheer volume of data that needs to be amassed at scale, the humans “cleaning up” that data for sweatshop wages throughout the Global South, and a truly alarming spike in the usage of energy and water underlying it all.

The truth is that we have entered a new and ominous age of empire: only a small handful of globally scaled companies can even enter the field of play. At the head of the pack with its ChatGPT breakthrough, how would OpenAI resist such temptations?

Spoiler alert: it didn’t. Armed with Microsoft’s billions, OpenAI is setting a breakneck pace, chased by a small group of the most valuable companies in human history—toward what end, not even they can define.

All this time, Hao has maintained her deep sourcing within the company and the industry, and so she was in intimate contact with the story that shocked the entire tech industry—Altman’s sudden firing and triumphant return. The behind-the-scenes story of what happened, told here in full for the first time, is revelatory of who the people controlling this technology really are.

Click: How to make what people want

Click: How to Make What People Want: Audiobook summary. As designers and investors, they have a front-row seat to some of the world’s most successful startups.

Click introduces the Foundation Sprint—a proven system for starting projects the right way, to make better decisions and move quickly toward a solution.

Inside are ten important lessons, a step-by-step playbook for the Foundation Sprint, and memorable stories from Nike, Google, Slack, and the frontiers of artificial intelligence research. Building on their bestselling book, Sprint, Knapp and Zeratsky introduce new recipes that teams can use to quickly and confidently start projects. For anyone who has ever had a good idea but didn’t know how to start, this book is for you.

Making Ideas Click: How to Validate and Adapt Your Product Strategy with Speed

Making Ideas Click: How to Validate and Adapt Your Product Strategy with Speed

Building a new product is challenging, and most new products unfortunately flop rather than click with customers. This failure can be a colossal waste of time and energy. While many factors contribute to success, the most important is whether the product and the customer fit together – whether it "clicks". A product clicks if it solves an important problem, stands out from the competition, and makes sense to people.

Often, teams get caught up in the details of technology, execution, and design, losing sight of the fundamental question: When this is offered to people, will they want it? All too frequently, teams bet on the wrong strategy, leading to failure.

The traditional approach involves spending months or even years building and launching a finished product before discovering if customers actually want it.

Even building a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for an ambitious solution can take about a year . This slow, risky path makes adaptation difficult if initial assumptions are incorrect.

However, there is a more reliable way to increase the chances of success. A system has been developed and proven, based on firsthand experience with successful products at companies like Google and numerous startups. This system helps teams clarify fundamentals, make rapid decisions, and set up fast experiments to figure out what clicks. It centers around using sprints to create, test, and adapt a product strategy based on real customer feedback.

The system begins with a Foundation Sprint. This is a two-day workshop designed for a team at the beginning of a big project. Its purpose is to quickly create clarity on the project's fundamentals. On day one, the team defines the Basics: who the target customer is, the problem to solve for them, the team's unique advantages, and the strongest competition. They then craft their differentiation – what makes their solution stand out – and practical principles to guide decision-making. On day two, the team explores multiple possible approaches to the solution using a method called Magic Lenses, which helps them consider competing opinions and perspectives visually. The process utilizes techniques like Note-and-Vote and working alone together to streamline discussions and decision-making. The Foundation Sprint requires intense focus, necessitating the team to call a "time-out" from normal distractions like constant meetings and email. Getting the "Decider" – the real boss who can make decisions stick – involved from the start is crucial.

The output of the Foundation Sprint is a Founding Hypothesis. This is a clear statement condensing the team's fundamental guesses about the customer, problem, approach, and differentiation. It's simple but powerful, like a compelling promise to customers. Crucially, the Founding Hypothesis is just a guess until proven. It's a tool for learning, intended to be tested, proven wrong, and updated.

This is where the Design Sprint comes in. Design Sprints are the recommended method for testing and adjusting the Founding Hypothesis. It's a five-day process that allows teams to solve problems and test new ideas.

Monday: Map out the customer problem.

Tuesday: Sketch competing solutions on paper.

Wednesday: Decide which solutions to test.

Thursday: Create realistic prototypes.

Friday: Test with customers.

The Design Sprint provides a "time machine" effect, allowing teams to see customer reactions to a prototype before investing in building the full solution. This allows for rapid experimentation using "tiny loops" between the hypothesis and customers. Instead of long development cycles, teams get multiple attempts to make their solution click.

Design Sprints can be used to prototype and test various aspects of the strategy, not just software. Teams can focus on testing key risks. Often, the first Design Sprint focuses on testing the product's story – how customers discover, learn about, and decide to try it, perhaps using a sales deck or website prototype. This helps validate if they are reaching the right customers, if the customers have the problem, and if the differentiation appeals to them.

A key advantage of Design Sprints over building an MVP is the ability to test multiple competing prototypes simultaneously. Teams can try different ideas head-to-head. Testing prototypes against competitors or the status quo provides valuable realism . Observing genuine, unguarded customer reactions to prototypes offers vital signals. If a prototype clicks with most or all testers, it's a strong indicator of potential product-market fit.

This system allows teams to iterate rapidly. If a prototype doesn't click with customers, the team adjusts their ideas and repeats the sprint process. These early adjustments, even if they involve changing the solution or modifying the Founding Hypothesis itself (like the target customer or differentiation), are seen not as failures but as "hyperefficient pivots" [conversation history, based on 114]. Pivoting when prototypes don't click takes hours, compared to months when an MVP fails.

By starting with a Foundation Sprint to form a clear hypothesis and following with consecutive Design Sprints to test and adjust it, teams radically increase their velocity. They prove (or disprove) their foundational guesses and adapt based on real customer interaction before investing significant time and money in building the final product. This system helps teams get closer to making a product that people actually want. Examples include companies like Phaidra testing an AI dashboard prototype or Genius Loci testing website+signs against an app concept, using this approach to validate their strategies and adapt based on customer feedback. Many successful companies and startups have used or adopted these methods to bring products to market.

No more tears: The dark secrets of Johnson & Johnson

An incendiary, deeply reported exposé of one of America’s oldest and most trusted pharmaceutical companies

One day in 2004, Gardiner Harris, early for a flight, sat down at an airport bar and started talking to the woman on the barstool beside him. sponsorship, not mentorship. Sponsorship involves managing others' impressions or beliefs about a protégé or colleague. Our social networks can and should be used on behalf of others. And it helps us too. What if we tried to position ourselves so that we could be the first to share new information, to elevate others to be more visible to decision makers, and to connect people to the help that they need? Suddenly, networking would become much more than just ladder climbing.

At a moment the workplace is going through a seismic transformation, this book is a potent reminder that we can all build more equitable connections effectively, meaningfully, and joyously. Have you turned the act of pretending you're "fine" into an art form? Does self-care feel like one more item on your already long to-do list?

We've been taught that resilience is the secret to navigating life's most difficult moments. But according to New York Times bestselling author, organizational psychologist, and researcher Dr. Tasha Eurich, there is one problem with this assumption. Scientifically, resilience isn't an unlimited resource, especially with the growing pressure and uncertainty we're experiencing today.

What if, instead of merely "bouncing back" from stressors and setbacks, we could harness them for forward growth?

Whether you're grappling with work stress, personal challenges, or the chaos of everyday life, Shatterproof offers an urgent alternative to stoic endurance as the only strategy for survival. Combining cutting-edge research, practical tools, and insights from her own struggle with a life-defining health crisis, Dr. Eurich will overturn your beliefs about what it takes to thrive through Instead of striving to escape it, the book argues, we should focus on making the treadmill a place we want to be. Finding this wellbeing begins with listening to our emotions, discovering intrinsic motivation and pursuing our authentic values. Fabian coaches you through this process of self-actualisation.

Wellbeing, however, is not solely an individual pursuit – it is something we cultivate together. But Kruse outlines a form of empathy that’s based in cognition, not emotion—a way for us to understand what the other person is thinking and feeling while keeping a distance from their feeling state—and shows us how we can strategically maneuver our level of engagement from “emotional empathy” to “cognitive empathy” in different circumstances. Then she utilizes Stoic philosophy and modern science to outline the how of emotional regulation and control. The bridge she builds between Stoicism and empathy gives us the knowledge and discipline we need to:

Calmly assess the power dynamics of any situation

Understand and manage our own emotions as well as the emotions of others

Defuse danger and turn conflict into connection

Skillfully steer a challenging conversation toward the result we want

Whether you're a leader striving to succeed in your role with integrity, an educator seeking to guide curious minds with compassion, a parent nurturing resilience in your children, or simply facing a personal or professional crossroads, Stoic Empathy is an essential toolkit for negotiating success in every area of your life.

Get the book

High functioning: Overcome your hidden depression and reclaim your joy

Do you feel you’re simply going through the motions?

Do you feel you’re simply going through the motions? the political architecture enabling cooperation and peace among nations - existed long before the rise of the West. Moving from ancient Sumer, India, Greece, and Mesoamerica, through medieval caliphates and Eurasian empires into the present, Acharya shows that humanitarian values, economic interdependence, and rules of inter-state conduct emerged across the globe over millennia. History suggests order will endure even as the West retreats. In fact, the end of Western dominance offers us the opportunity to build a better world, where non-Western nations find more voice, power, and prosperity. Instead of fearing the future, the West should learn from history and cooperate with the Rest to forge a more equitable order.

This is the definitive account of how world order evolved and why it will survive the decline of the West.

Get the book

The super upside factor: Asymmetric principles that will 10X your life

A practical playbook to maximize luck in life and career

Venture capitalists manage to raise and invest trillions of dollars despite being wrong most of time through asymmetric bets – where a few big wins outsize losses by factors of 1,000x.

In The Super Upside Factor, Daniel Kang draws on his experience as a venture capitalist at Softbank Vision Fund and a Y Combinator-backed founder to adapt asymmetric principles for personal and professional life. He offers a clear framework for maximizing luck and generating outsized returns—what he calls Super Upsides.

Through vivid, real-life experiments, Kang demonstrates how he put these principles into practice—from securing a book deal writing just 15 minutes a day; to recovering from a spiralling plane as a pilot; to raising millions by betting on pivotal career shift.

This book draws upon the author’s firsthand experience going from no money, network, or looks to a highly successful career in entrepreneurship and venture capitalism.
